BLACH HOPS

Visited the BLACK HOPS BREWERY yesterday and had a very interesting time. This is a very small brewery, the smallest on the Gold Coast. We where able to have a long and informative session with the head brewer while going through the beer options. From what was explained to us, that because of the small size and output, Black Hops is able to be a bit more adventurous with its beers.

We had, in order as the beer appears on their beer list. Beach House Ale 4.9%. 30 Cal, Californian Lager 3%, Bitter Fun, Hoppy Ale 5%, EggNog Stout 5.3% and the seasonal beer, the Hornet India Pale 6%. My top three, in order where the Beach House, the Eggnog, and the Hornet though there was not a lot between them.

From what we where told , Black Hops gets inviolved with their drinking public who could get the opportunity to get some hands on experience. They are in the process of getting an online shop, and a members club.

All in all of the three breweries visited in this area, this is by far the best in my opinion. As I am travelling and am having the usual travellers wi-fi connection issues, I haven’t looked at Black Hops site yet.

BURLEIGH BREWERY

Not far from BALTER is the BERLEIGH BREWERY where we went to next. This another nice spot, a large inside area and a nice big outside setting which was well populated when we where there. There was a  buffalo wing food truck called CYCHO I think and live music inside,  few more beers on tap here, I did find out a bit more about this brewery than the last one but I did have to work a bit to do it.The beers we had where the Helles, 3.5%.very easy , The Hasselhoff 5.5%, Fig Jam 7%, Hef wheat,5%  I think possibly my choice here,  Dailey Dog 4.2% a blackberry infused Lager, I didn’t get a lot of berries in this beer which while not.overly big on character, I think it had its place, like rose,s  fizzy red wines and  fruit cups you probably get a few of these down while sitting iN the shade on a summers evening. I also had My Wife’s Bitter which I have tried before in bottles , like a lot of beers I think the keg version is the preferred option, the hops being somewhat more restrained.Well worth a visit here.

BALTER BREWING

I visited the BALTER BREWERY yesterday and tried a few of the beers the beers on tap. The brewery is a very nice spot to sit in, abig open and airy space, and there was a food truck in attendance, the BRAZZA BBQ. I wasn’t able to pick up much information about the brewery   and there was no printed material about it or any notes on the beers other than the tap labels. I gave the pilsner, the Tangerine Dream and an Alt Brown a go. All of them on the easy drinking side, which, given the climate is probably a good thing , however I wouldn’t have minded if there had been something a little more challenging, a sour or a saison perhaps . I visited the BALTER Site but didn’t get much from it , no beer notes to refer to.

CHAT PLUS MORE ABOUT KEMPSEY PUBS

Apart from the last two posts, I have been away from my blog for a couple of months, I can think of plenty of excuses and only a couple of valid reasons, one reason was a problem with my lap top and another was lack of motivation. Perhaps a level of disillusionment in the craft beer scene. No worries, I will try to get back into it. I am on my way to visit son and one third heir in Qld and hope to get some blogs out.

To carry on from the earlier post today am a bit underwhelmed by Kempsey. I booked into the Kempsey Hotel because the internet said they had beer from the local brewery on tap.what I didn’t know when booking was that this hotel had ceased to operate as a pub a month earlier, it may be still an ok hotel but that is not the same thing, I could have done better at a motel if all I wanted was a room. It seems as thought the previous owner pulled the pokies out and distributed them around other pubs which left the place uncommercial.

I have already mentioned the Great Northern and have nothing more to add. However the Top zpub teold me that they did have Bucket Brewery Beer in tap but it didn’t sell so the cut it off though they still gave the bottles in their bottle shop.Which I did as I was leaving and found that there was no stock ofBucket Brewery available. Here is. Picture of my chickenparma which was not bad for $12.50

I found the Railway Hotel which like theKempsey is nolonger a pub but is still a Hotel  and also a bottle shop according to the sign. That’s two out of four I Kempsey closed down that I know about. Next trip up this way I will Havel. To find somewhere else to stay. If things go to plan I am going to stop at Port McQuarie on the way back

TOP PUB KEMPSEY

Crossed the road to the West Kempsey Hotel otherwise aka The Top Pub.  While still no local beer this place appeals to me more than the Great Northern, it looks like it has been recently done up , it is all white and has a large widen floor verandah facing the street. Took some doing but I eventually got the pictures inserted. And that is another old

GREAT NORTHERN HOTEL, KEMPSEY

I have called in to the Great Northern Hotel in Kempsey. When I asked if the beers from the local brewery where sold here I was told by the bar lady, that this was a Tooheys pub an d they didn’t gave any other beers, not even James Squire or indeed any other craft beer on tap or even in bottles in the fridge. So with that, I will finish my “old” and go across the street to the other pub to seee what they have.

STOCKADE: TWO OUT OF THREE

The second of the three STOCKADE BEERS a”RARE INK”SESSION STOUT 4.4%.  Pours nice and black and has a zingy taste, a toasty twang. I still can only get a slight aroma but maybe others would get more, still struggling with diminished sense of smell. The flavours are picking up as the beer warms up in the glass. Haven’t identified much bitterness. Paired the STOUT witch a pork pie andEnglish  mustard and I think the mustard dominated the beer at first. A very nice stout. No tasting notes on the STOCKADE site nor does there appear to be a twitter account

STOCKADE, THE FIRST OF THREE

I picked up three STOCKADE BREWERY beers today from LEURA CELLARS. The first one I tried was MYSTERIOUS IIPA a 9% beer. This seemed to me to be a very complex beer. I didn’t get a great aroma from it but I think that is because I a recent dose of the flue has broken my sense of smell somewhat. I did get a bit of fruitiness though. It is a reddish brown colour with some head, a sweet almost fruity malt hit at the start, candy like and a little spicy (citrusy). The further into this beer I went it seemed to become chewy, and developed a jammy marmalade pudding taste, orange perhaps. It finished with a hoppy dry bitter taste, which nicely , didn’t go on forever. I found this a better IIPA than most and one to try again. My other beer for the evening was one of my own home brew beers. Indouble canned a COOPERS ENGLISH BITTERS, which came in around 7.6% and to my mind it is more like an ESB. if I do say do myself it is a nice malty beer with the bitters only being noticeable at the end of the drink. As far as I can tell STOCKADE doesn’t have a twitter account.
