BREAKFAST CREEK HOTEL 1st VISIT
SUBSTATION NO 41
I am starting off with a XXXX ON THE WOOD,As I am not a 4x drinker I can’t comment on the usual tapped beer so am unable to compare them, but I really like this beer presented like this. The bar maid tells me that the beer is always fresh as a new keg is started at the beginning of every day and if unfinished it is not used next day. On a hot busy day ten kegs a day are apparently not unusual. There are quite a few bars in this hotel, I am in the private bar at a he moment but will have a wander around eventually making it to the rum bar . There is a great traditional bar lady in this bar.
Went for dinner in the Spanish Room Steakhouse and tried. 60day cured steak, which was a very nice bit of meat and came with baked potato and coleslaw, I went for hour English mustard rather than a sauce and hot it certainly was, it was I remember mustard as it used to be and not as commercial varieties are now, after the first go with it I had to be a bit careful with the slathering. I don’t usually go for desert but this time I went the rhubarb and apple pie as a base for the couple of rums I was going to try, pie came with custard and ice cream. Pull out all the stops.
SUBSTATION NO 41 RUM BAR
A list of the rums in the order of tasting , as the bar was busy I had some difficulty with the note taking and so there are probably some gaps in the information
1, ABUELO 12 yo great aroma quite a bite to it , vanilla caramel
2, RON MILLIONARIO not the same alcohol hit to it at the outset but develops on the pallet has a fruit taste ,bigger than the Abuelo more has a more syrup consistency
3, EL DORADO 15yo, supposed to. Be the better of the three so far tried
4, PRESIDENTE 23yo much darker than the previous rums is more caramel/ syrup treacle _
SUBSTATION NO 41 2nd VISIT
1, SAINT JAMES RHUM FROM Martinique st 12yo nice aroma some Christmas pudding notes alcohol burn , residual plum fruit , vanilla (FRENCH. CARIBBEAN]
2, BRITISH NAVY RUM, OLD NAVY RUM , GOSLINGS ,EASY ENOUGH TO DRINK DOES LEAVE A DRY TASTE DOES LEAVE A SLIGHTLY DRY TASTE,, BERMUDA, NICE AROMA IN MY OPINION SOME VANILLAS,creamy, not cloves, custard nutmeg not cinnamon, maybe mace, some smoke
3, AMPERO ANIVERSARIO VENEZUELA first impression fiery on the nose more fire in the mouth , starting to pick up some vanilla/ (SPANISH CARIBBEAN)
GENERAL … Aromas develop as the rum in the glass ,rests,at the out set is not as complex/challenging as the Goslings ‘
4. BUNDABERG 2015 BLENDERS EDITION, QUITE A BIG ALCOHOL HIT ON THE NOSE AT THE BEGINNING Starts off with the on the oak characteristic, has a good nose with a bite, starting to pick up vanillas, maybe a little less robust than the earlier rums this one is retaining its fiery alcohol hit in the mouth but it’s aroma is starting to show vanillas , the alcohol is overwhelming the taste . The alcohol fire never faded
5, CUBANEY CENTENARIO OLIVVER AND OLIVIER 2015 Restrained alcohol on the nose, more body , much easier to drink , has a cordial like consistency, oil, fire.
I hope to be able to et back to the RUM Bar some time in the future, to continue on with my rum exploration , some time in the future, but who knows when,
I will probably edit this adding more about the various rums ,, when I have researched them
