MOUNTAIN GOAT BEER AND FOOD MATCH
I am on my way to Zest, a restaurant in Leura for a beer event, this is the first time I have been to this place.
The beers are from the Mountain Goat brewery, Victoria which are to be matched to the meal.
They have put me at a table on my own with my back to the room venue set up restraints I suppose,
but I wasn’t to pleased so now I am facing the room, still at a one person table but very close to nearest neighbour.
The starter beer and the one that goes with the first course is Mountain Goat STEAM ALE 4.5% which is a very nice beer, I don’t know if the one bottle is going to last.
Zest is full and it looks as if all the tables are part of the event
1st course GAMBAS PIL PIL ,, PRAWNS IN CHILLI SAUCE , TASTY
ED from MOUNTAIN GOAT Brewery is introducing the beers.
GUY is head man from ZEST; ROBERT from LEURA CELLARS
Potatoes bravas has just hit the table to join the selection of dips and pitta bread.
With this sitting on your own, you don’t have to worry about who gets what, it is all mine
SUMMER ALE to go with fish cakes, supposed to be one can between two, but someone else can work it out
Fish cakes with samfaina, which appears to be a tomato and veg salsa, or Spanish Fish cakes,, can taste the fish, the beer with this is light
KANGAROO SKEWERS with FANCY PANTS Amber ale. 5.2% I thought poor old skippy was a bit tough and stringy, but then I am not an expert on ‘roo.
Fancy Pants is quite a filling beer
LAMB MEATBALLS with I.P.A 6.2%. The meat balls were very nice, the IPA is over hopped to my taste So I will pass the remains of the bottle on.
SURE FOOT STOUT 5% to go with the pud. Which is dark chocolate and hazelnut pudding.
Then a limited release 7 SEED COFFEE PORTER. 6.2%. I don’t know what the seeds are, not much head on this beer
but then I have been using the same glass all night I get the slightest hint of chillies.
I thought that both the Stout and the Porter went with the chocolate
Plenty of food but altogether maybe a bit rich for me. I think it maybe more calorie than quantity
So far I think the best pairing was the first, the prawns and steam ale
Just before the last few people a bottle of MOUNTAIN GOAT BARLEY WINE 12.5% was shared out
This is one of the best beers have had in a long time.Copied directly from my notes;
Fruit cake aroma, Christmas Pud taste, creamy mouthfeel, taste of a light or milk chocolate,
(undecipherable word) also taste Raisins soaked in rum r sherry or cognac. with the alcohol heat
without the raw spirit burn.
