We had to spend the day in Newtown yesterday so took the opportunity to call in to a couple of pubs and Young Henry’s Brewery.
First called in to the BANK HOTEL and had a CASCADE FIRST HARVEST ALE 5.5% not cheap at $12.80 for two middies, the beer was not too hoppy, noticeable malt, and bitters are not overpowering
The Bank does beer events at its Uncle Hops Craft Bar, open from five o’clock, about twelve taps including a hand pumps, there had been an event scheduled for last night and so wasn’t open until seven. We turned up at six unaware that the opening time had been set for later, as stated on a poster which I hadn’t seen. Even so it seems a waste to me to have a bar in your fairly busy pub closed. We cut our losses and caught the next train back up the mountains and had a beer at the Station Bar
Nipped up to the COOPERS HOTEL FOR A TOOHEYS DARLING ALE , 4.4% $ 8.60 x 2 Never come across this beer and on the absence of anything else decided to give it a try Golden colour very light to drink slight taste of bitters no malts coming through. I wonder if the bitterness of this beer would build up if you had a few.
Later on in the afternoon we went to YOUNG HENRY,S BREWERY, This place has grown a bit since I was last here, more tables and a bit of an outside area
We had between us a NEW HOP ALE 6% ON HAND PUMP, NICE HAND PUMPED BEER, GOOD TEMPERATURE SOME HOPPY BITTERS; a YOUNG MUSSEL WIT, couldn’t pick up the musslls, a bit fizzed, some banana aroma and a herby taste, CANT PICK UP THE MUSSELS BUT A BIT FIZZED SOME BANANA AROMA HERBY Taste; A PINK LIGHTNING a Fruit Beer z with “apparently ” elderflower, a bit of a sour taste particularly at the outset. I could have sat here for some time but there comes a time when you have to move on.
From there we went to THE UNION HOTEL and between us had a MORNINGTOON COMMONFOLK IMPERIAL BROWN 7% A CHOCOLATE NOSE, A bitter chocolate taste and also some mintand/oor ginger.; PRICKLY MOSES EVENING CHARM 4.8% It says this is a saison so who am I to argue. I get either burnt orange or Scottish marmaladetaste with a sourish tang to the aroma. A taste of NEWSTEAD IMPERIAL AUSSIE TUKKA a beer from QLD which had a slightly off taste, a herbed beer
EXIT BREWING 0008 DOUBLE SESSION XXXIPA 9% not as hoppy as I expected , bitter, burnt sugar
NOMAD UTOPIAN DEVIL 5.3% Amber/red ale , a light easy drinker,
WOLF OF THE WILLOW SMOKED PORTER JSP 5.2% Johnny’s Smoked Porter, taste of smoked American style bbq ribs, burnt caramel, bitter oranges
SHENANIGANS a. Bit dry, tannin mouthfeel , hand pump, improves as the level in the glass drops and maybe as the temperature comes up.
STONE AND WOOD STRONG ALE
Then as the Bank hotel Craft Bar was a no goer we had a Badlands Dark when we got to the Station Bar.
Some pretty good beers in that lot.
